Plant 2 Building Demolition Update

On October 12, 2004 , Mercury Marine submitted the Self-Implementing Cleanup Plan for the demolition of the above grade building structure to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5. The EPA requires a Self-Implementing Cleanup Plan to be developed due to the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) within the structure.

The Self-Implementing Cleanup Plan provides background information of the facility including site history and prior cleanup activities. The plan also identifies previous environmental sampling procedures, locations and analytical characterization for several building components such as the building walls and ceilings. In addition, the plan identifies demolition activities and disposal procedures related to the project.

Prior to the submittal of the Self-Implementing Cleanup Plan, Mercury Marine's environmental consultant performed a Pre-Demolition Asbestos Inspection, Pre-Demolition Hazardous Materials Assessment and developed Technical Specification for the Pre-demolition Asbestos Removal. These reports and technical specifications were submitted to the EPA with the Self-Implementing Cleanup Plan.

On January 3, 2005 , Mercury Marine received approval from the EPA for the cleanup and demolition of the Plant 2 building structure. As requested, the approval is limited to the above-grade building structure. The below-grade (floor slab and soil) will be addressed through the EPA's Superfund Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) process.

Mercury Marine is currently developing a Request for Proposal to be submitted to potential demolition contractors. The start of demolition activities will be determined once proposals are received and a contractor is selected.
